I do now, and have always loved music. I own maybe 40 gigs of music, which is a small amount these days, but my collection covers an extremely wide range. I was thinking the other day of putting together a list of my Top 10 favorite songs, and I finally got around to it.
A friend of mine recently introduced me to GrooveShark, a website that allows free streaming of music, playlist creation, and much more. So, I’ve used GrooveShark to create my Top 10 playlist for your listening enjoyment.
You can listen to all 10 here: Sam’s Top 10 Playlist, or individually as follows:
#1 – Bonny Portmore by Loreena McKennitt – Celtic music has always been my favorite. I’m a direct decendent of many of the kings of Scotland, and I guess the blood of the Celts has lent some favoritism. Of all the Celtic songs I’ve heard, this one is my favorite.
#2 – Bullets with Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins – I was depressed a lot as a kid, bitter and angry. This song represents much of my youth. I’ve always loved the phrase “The World is a Vampire”…It can be so true!
#3 – Frontier Psychiatrist by The Avalanches – I have never in any way been normal. This song is such a perfect representation of oddity that I really related to it the first time I heard it.
#4 – Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus – This is a bittersweet song, and a near perfect representation of my youthful pursuits of love from afar. Alas, mine didn’t have happy endings until later in life.
#5 – The Freshman by The Verve Pipe – This song was the song that played before my first dance with a girl I loved all through junior high and high school. I couldn’t for the life of me say what was playing while we danced though, since I couldn’t think properly…The Verve Pipe has been a favorite band ever since.
#6 – Mad World Remix by Donnie Darko – Donnie Darko is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen, and this song is just as strange. I loved it that it was used in the Gears of War trailer. There are times when I have to agree whole heartedly…it IS a Mad World!
#7 – If I Had $1,000,000 by Bare Naked Ladies – If my life has a theme song, this is it. I have never met anyone else as determined as me to be an uber-millionaire. Here is to retiring on a beach by 30 🙂
#8 – Chasing Cars by SnowPatrol – This is I and my wife’s song. I very clearly remember the day we picked this as “our song”, and it fits us perfectly. This represents the happiest part of my life!
#9 – Cathedrals by Jump Little Children – I heard this song for the first time watching the TV show Everwood. There is something moving and ethereal and absolutely fascinating about this song. It is tied for my favorite. While I can’t really relate this to my life, I really like it, and it is obscure, so there.
#10 – Keep Your Mind Wide Open by AnnaSophia Robb – This is the theme song in the movie Bridge to Terabithia, and is sung by the main actress in the movie. After much deliberation, I have decided that this is my favorite song. It is so upbeat and imaginative, and perfectly represents my hope for the future!
So that is it, me and my life in 10 songs. That would make a really good company, matching people based on their Life Playlist or something. With millions of songs out there, a perfect match really would be a perfect match.
