I’ve always been a fan of the classics, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series is one of my favorites. Few classics have sparked so many derivatives and variations than has Sherlock Holmes, from the movie Young Sherlock Holmes to the antics of Scooby-Doo 🙂
That said, this latest rendition of Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams, is by far the best I’ve ever seen. In fact, I would say it was one of the most enjoyable movies I’ve ever seen. I’d compare it to another movie, but I really can’t think of another movie that would do the comparison justice.
Personally, I’m glad that Robert Downey Jr. has made such an excellent comeback. His portrayal of Tony Stark in Iron Man was phenomenal, and did great justice to the character in the comics. His rapier wit and dry humor is always enjoyable, and made him a perfect fit for the role of Sherlock Holmes.
The presentation of London was unique, almost steampunk in some ways, and thoroughly captivating. There were some very cool effects, and some truly awesome fight sequences. However, the star of the show was the stars of the show. The onscreen banter between Holmes and Watson was hilarious, and truly made the movie.
Downey played Sherlock Holmes to perfection. Humor, eccentricity, deductive reasoning…he delivered the character perfectly. Law’s performance as Watson was also excellent, but very, very different from the Watson portrayed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Say what you want about Guy Ritchie, but everything fit together like a well oiled machine.
The plot was great, the presentation masterful, the imagery captivating. I loved this movie, I would recommend it highly to anyone looking for an enjoyable escape to the world of 19th century london.
Check out the trailer below for a sampling of this awesome movie (my only complaint is that there are scenes and lines in the trailer that didn’t make the final cut of the movie) 🙁 :
