Update: G is now closed
In 2007 and 2008, my Valentine’s dinner has been at La Caille, an incredible 5 star restaurant in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Sandy, UT. The food there is absolutely fantastic, but very, very expensive. My bill both years was over $200 with tip.
So, for 2009, my wife and I decided to try something a little different. I have posted previously about the amazing G restaurant in Orem, Utah, my favorite place to eat for breakfast, lunch, and now dinner.The week before Valentine’s Day, G sent out an announcement that every week on Friday and Saturday, from 5-9pm, he would be doing fine dining at his restaurant.
It is a four course meal, including appetizer, salad, entree and dessert, all for only $18 per person. There is a menu with a wide variety of options (240 possible combinations, if my math serves me right). For Valentine’s day there were 4 possible appetizers, 4 possible salads, 5 entrees and 3 desserts.
I chose the Italian Bruschetta for my appetizer, the Caesar salad, the New York steak with potatoes and veggies for my entree, and cheesecake with strawberry sauce for dessert. My wife had the stuffed mushrooms, a tomato mozzarella salad, grilled salmon with creamy rice and veggies, and the blueberry tart.
The portions were perhaps a hair small for my taste, but I left filled. The plating was perfectly done, making the visual experience almost as good as the actual eating. The timing between dishes was a little long, but not bad at all for their first weekend. I’ve waited longer at La Caille. The flavors of each dish complemented perfectly. Nothing clashed, and everything was delicious.
Chef G has shown his mastery of a wide variety of cooking styles, from provincial France to classic American, and there is absolutely no beating the incredible price.

I have eaten at a variety of 4 and 5 star, Zagat rated restaurants, and I would easily put G in that category. I highly recommend a fine dinner at G to anyone looking for 5 star taste on a 2 or 3 star budget (our bill was only $38 before tip).
As mentioned before, G in Orem is also open Monday-Friday from 6-9am for breakfast, and from 11am-2pm for lunch. Breakfast is made to order, $3.99, and lunch is served catering style for $6.50.
