The 20 Best Cheeses in the World

I live pretty close to Harmon’s grocery store in Orem, and one of my favorite things to buy there is cheese. I love cheese. So, every time I go in, which is pretty much every day, I stop by the cheese island to see what’s being sampled and what’s new. Most days I end up chatting with Andrew, their head cheesemonger (yes, that’s a real word.)

We got to chatting the other day about favorite cheeses (mine is Barely Buzzed by Beehive Cheese), and I decided to ask him to write out a list of his favorite cheeses so I could write a blog post about it. So, without further adieu, here is the list (if you don’t recognize a cheese, just Google it for more info):

Andrew the Cheesemonger’s 20 Favorite Cheeses

  1. Butterbound Promontory Cheddar
  2. Pyrenees Onetik Tomme Noir
  3. Parmigiano-Reggiano
  4. Asiago Fresco
  5. Fontina Fontal
  6. Cablanca Goat Gouda
  7. Brie Supreme
  8. Belletoile Brie
  9. Gruyere
  10. Boursin Shallot and Chive
  11. Burrata Mozzarella
  12. Goat Milk Mozzarella
  13. Rembrandt Gouda
  14. Smoked Habanero Cheddar
  15. Hirtenkรคse
  16. Rougette
  17. Mobay
  18. Midnight Moon
  19. Bread Cheese
  20. Gjetost (Brunost outside of the US)

I have to say, it’s a particularly tasty list. I’ve had at least half of the cheeses on there, and I’d agree with Andrew that they are all amazing cheeses. Pretty much all of these cheeses are available at Harmon’s grocery store in Orem, and if not I’m sure they can order them.

Personally I’d add a few to the list, such as Barely Buzzed, Rogue River Blue, and Mascarpone, but all in all it’s an excellent assortment of cheese finery. Add toast points or bagel chips and enjoy (and remember, cheese should always be served at room temperature) ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. An impressive list but being a former Wisconsinite I don’t recognize many of these.Have you sampled Wisconsin cheeses? Perhaps a nice chocolate cheese….lol..

  2. Being married to a cheese man I have had the distinct pleasure to be intoduced to a lot of cheese. Before him (thanks love) my cheese palate included cheddar, swiss and provolone. No joke. Now I actually have tried some of these cheeses! YUMMY!!

    1. I’ve had the Onetik Tomme Noir as a sample once, and it’s on the Top 20 list, but the flavor doesn’t come to mind so I’ll have to try it again. I’ll definitely give the Doux de Montagne a try…thanks!

  3. I missed the Onetik Tomme Noir on the list because it was preceded by “Pyrenees”. I tried it today (7/20/2010) for the first and was very impressed. So was my wife. I’d like to know what you think of it after trying it again. It’s great with the Harmon’s multi-grain rolls. Also Doux de Montagne. Unfortunately, the were out of that one. When I asked Andrew for a cheese similar to Doux de Montagne, he suggested Onetik Tomme Noir and it’s just wonderful.

    1. Awesome, I’ll go by and get a sample tomorrow and give you my opinion. Thanks for the tip ๐Ÿ™‚ Also, if you are interested, on August 13th from 11am to 1pm, they are doing a special cheese event at the Orem Harmon’s…worth checking out!
