The Copper Onion opened in Salt Lake City about four months ago, and ever since then I’ve heard excellent review after excellent review. Yesterday I finally had the opportunity to taste for myself the culinary excellence that is The Copper Onion.
The Copper Onion is owned and operated by Ryan and Colleen Lowder, and I must say they have done an excellent job. Ryan, in addition to being the owner, is also the Chef, and has worked with and for a number of Michelin rated restaurants, including the incredible Jean-Georges. His impressive résumé is evident in the quality and flavor of the food he cooks and serves, and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if The Copper Onion ends up with a Michelin star or three of its own.
I didn’t know it at the time, but Saturday from 11:30 to 4 is brunch, so I was lucky enough to experience their brunch menu. I’m a huge fan of Eggs Benedict, and I was quite happy to find that on the menu ($9). It was quite delicious, with perfectly cooked eggs and a stunning Hollandaise sauce. Their choice of Prosciutto cotto ham was excellent, and the potatoes and sautéed spinach were both superb.
My wife, who absolutely loves pasta, ordered the Pasta Carbonara ($10), made with house-made fettuccine, egg, spring onion, Niman Ranch smoked bacon, and cream. The pasta was stunning, and was easily the best example that I’ve ever tasted. I loved the fact that it contained Niman Ranch bacon (sustainable, natural meat), since I’ve done Internet marketing work for Niman Ranch in the past
Though my wife was full, I couldn’t resist trying one of their desserts. The dessert menu is ever changing, and I didn’t want to miss out! I went with the Blueberry Cobbler, served with a scoop of their house-made ice cream ($6). The crumble was stunning, the ice cream decadent, and the blueberry portion delicious. I could have done with a bit more crumble, but overall it was a great dish.
All in all it was an incredible meal, and we got out for $30 including gratuity. We were seated instantly, the server was awesome, and the food arrived promptly. I’ll definitely be back as often as possible, and I highly recommend The Copper Onion to anyone looking for an incredible meal. You can read additional reviews at Yelp and Urbanspoon.
