I love breakfast, perfect fried eggs, thick bacon, buttery toast….it’s making my mouth water just typing this 🙂 Because I love breakfast so much, I’m always on the lookout for a delicious café or diner close to home that serves the perfect breakfast. In Utah, I had previously found only 2 contenders, Chick’s Cafe in Heber, and Nate’s Diner in Provo.
Now there is a another contender for the best breakfast in Utah, and I’m awarding it first place…Joe’s Cafe in Orem.
The owner, Joe Hicks, is a fellow Texan, and one dang good cook! The menu was bursting with southern goodness, from grits to chili and everything in between. The offer breakfast and lunch, all the time. None of this, “we’re sorry, but no breakfast after 11” crap…just fantastic food, made to order, all day long.
No surprise, I ordered from the breakfast menu. I got 2 eggs over medium, 4 slices of thick bacon, 2 pieces of wheat toast, and a bowl of grits. The cost? About $6…heck yeah! The eggs were perfectly cooked, which isn’t easy. Over medium is tricky to get just right. The bacon was thick and flavorful, but not at all gristly. Toast was good too…and the grits! Oh, it’s been a while since I’ve had good southern grits, but these were just perfect!
My wife ordered the club sandwich with chips, and let me just tell you, this is one massive sandwich. I took a bite, and could barely get my mouth around it. It comes cut into quarters, with a massive pile of chips dominating the middle of the plate. My wife was starving, and she finished half 🙂 The price for this culinary masterpiece? About $6.
We’ve since been back and tried the Joe’s Omelette, and the French Dip Sandwich, both of which were amazing. The au jus with the french dip was killer. The omelette was the biggest and most delicious I’d ever had, made with 4 eggs, and loaded with bacon, sausage, onions, mushrooms, green pepper, cheese and southern goodness! I couldn’t even finish the whole thing…
I also saw some proper chili on the menu (no beans!), which I will definitely be trying in the near future. That’s right, real chili has no beans, just meat…you try entering chili with beans into a chili contest down south and see what happens to you 🙂
The food was amazing, and Joe and his wife were super friendly. I felt like a regular, not a first timer. Heck, we got there right before closing, and they stayed open an extra half hour so we could give it a try. That’s good southern hospitality for ya. Thanks Joe!
With awesome food and affordable prices, my wife and I are going to become regulars at Joe’s Cafe. Highly recommended!
They are open Monday – Friday from 10am to 7pm, and Saturday from 8am to 4pm. No Sundays. Joe’s Cafe is located at 1126 South State Street, Orem, UT 84097. Phone # is 801-607-5377. It’s right across the street from University Mall, and there is plenty of parking out back.
Doesn’t look like they have a website yet…maybe I’ll build one for them. You can find directions here:
