I’ll preface this by saying that I am not a Trekkie, I am not a Trekker…I don’t like Start Trek, not even a little. However, I do like J.J. Abrams, who almost always does incredible work. That said, I absolutely LOVED the latest Star Trek movie. It was an absolutely fantastic movie, and it wasn’t very Trekkie at all! Beam me up Scotty!
This particular movie deals with the world of the original Star Trek, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701, in the days of Captain James Tiberius Kirk. You get to experience humans, Romulans and Vulcans (though no Klingons). You get transporters, phasers, star ships, and some incredible action.
Abrams did an amazing job with character development, staying true to the attitude’s and styles that so endeared the original Trekkie crowd, but without requiring watchers to know anything about the Star Trek universe. I wasn’t really a fan of the choice of Zach Quinto as the young Spock, though he played it well. I have to say though, it was pretty cool to see Leonard Nimoy reprise his role as the original Spock 🙂
The special effects and cinematography were first rate, including some absolutely breathtaking scenes of deep space. Whether you like Star Trek or hate it, you will LOVE this movie! The $76.5 million dollar opening weekend says a lot. I intend to go back and see it again, this time in IMAX.
