I have a habit (good or bad, depending on your point of view) of buying books that look interesting, on a whim. Interestingly though, every book I have ever bought like this has turned out to be fantastic 🙂 Guess I thin slice well (Malcolm Gladwell, “Blink”).
Anyhow, a recent discovery which impressed me was a series by Michael Scott entitled “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel”. There are two books in the series that have been released to date, “The Alchemyst”, and “The Magician”, with the third (of six), “The Sorceress”, scheduled for release in 2009.
These books tell a tale of magic and mystery set in our time. A brother and sister, Josh and Sophie, find themselves sucked into a battle of magic forces that have been warring for centuries. In a matter of hours, the course of their lives is forever changed. They travel the world in the company of Nicholas Flamel, and find themselves meeting some of the most incredible beings of what they thought was “mythology”, but which is in reality, reality.
Nicholas Flamel, also mentioned in the first Harry Potter book, was a real person. He and his wife Perenelle lived in France in the 14th century, and were well known for their study of Alchemy. Their home in France still stands today on the Rue de Montmorency.
I enjoyed these books very much, and would put them in the same class as books such as Harry Potter and Fablehaven. An absolute gem, which I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys books that blend history, magic and modern day. Movie rights have been purchased by New Line Cinema, and the first installment is currently in pre-production (courtesy of Wikipedia).

UPDATE: Book 3, The Sorceress, is available as of today, at least in the US. I managed to get it yesterday, and just finished it about 10 minutes ago. I must say, Michael Scott outdoes himself with each new book! I’m almost sad that there are 3 more books, because I want so much to know how this story is going to end 🙂
Be forewarned, these are books that MUST be read in order. If you have not yet had the chance to experience the magic of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, now is the time to start. You won’t be dissapointed!
